Sutherland Peashrub is a unique fastigiate form of C. arborescens found at Cheyenne Research Station. An extremely hardy columnar shrub or small tree that could be used for screens or stong vertical statements in the landscape. This upright form grows 6 to 14 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide and has a loose, vase-shape. Small, bright yellow pea-like flowers are yellow and followed by pea-like pods. Fall color is yellow. Attractive to hummingbirds and some songbirds.
Grow in full sun and well-drained soil. Does not perform well on wet or sandy sites, though it is otherwise very tough. USDA Zone 2, drought and heat tolerant, pH tolerant to 8.0, and will tolerate shearing.
